As a kid I loved sitting down to dinner at my Grandma’s house and waiting for the warm, freshly baked dinner rolls that she made from scratch to make their way to me. Yum!
I used to think making my own dinner rolls from scratch would be too much of a challenge, but I was wrong!
This dinner rolls recipe (also known as easy yeast rolls) will show you how easy they are to make, even for beginners. This foolproof recipe ensures soft, fluffy rolls with simple ingredients and minimal effort, filling your home with the irresistible aroma of baking bread for a cozy, homemade touch.
Why I love this recipe
In my kitchen, there’s a simple reason this dinner rolls recipe is a favorite: it’s both incredibly delicious and super easy to make.
- these rolls come out perfectly every time, golden and slightly crisp on the outside, while staying soft and airy on the inside
- these rolls fit perfectly into any meal plan, if you’re hosting a holiday dinner, complementing a weeknight soup, or just want something extra for your family brunch
Ingredients
- all-purpose flour
- instant active dry yeast
- granulated sugar
- salt
- warm milk
- butter
- egg
Step by step
- Preheat your oven to 375°F.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine 3 cups of flour, instant yeast, granulated sugar, salt, warm milk, softened butter, and egg.
- Using a dough hook attachment on the lowest speed, mix until the flour is fully incorporated, scraping down the sides of the bowl with a spatula as necessary. Increase the speed to medium and beat for 2 minutes.
- Add 1/2 cup of flour at a time, blending with the dough hook until incorporated. Repeat until you’ve added a total of 4 to 4 ½ cups of flour, mixing at medium speed for another 2 minutes until a soft and slightly sticky dough ball is formed.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly greased bowl, cover with a towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise for 30 minutes at room temperature until doubled in size.
- After the dough has risen, deflate it by gently punching it down. Pinch off pieces of dough and form 24 rolls, making sure they are perfectly smooth on top for the best appearance.
- Place the formed rolls in a lightly greased 9 x 13 baking dish. Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let them rise for an additional 30 minutes at room temperature.
- Bake the rolls for 12 to 15 minutes or until they turn golden brown and are cooked through. If the tops of the rolls are getting too brown, you can tent them with foil to prevent over-browning.
- Once out of the oven, brush the freshly baked rolls with melted butter for an extra layer of flavor and irresistible shine.
Tips for Best Results
- pay close attention to the temperature of the warm milk, as it’s crucial for activating the yeast and ensuring a successful rise, you want it between 100-110 degrees Fahrenheit
- when rolling the dough balls, carefully ensure they are perfectly smooth on top to achieve a professional-looking finished product
Serving suggestion
These homemade yeast rolls are incredibly versatile and pair well with just about anything.
Serve them alongside a hearty bowl of olive garden chicken gnocchi soup for a comforting meal. Also, they are perfect for soaking up the sauce from your Tuscan chicken pasta or sheet pan lasagna.
And of course they are a staple with a classic roasted turkey breast and turkey gravy for the holidays. Trust me, no matter what you serve them with, they will steal the show.
Variations
- add a sprinkle of chopped fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme to the dough for a fragrant twist.
- mix in some shredded cheddar cheese for a decadent and savory option.
- brush the tops of the rolls with melted butter and sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar before baking.
Storing tips
To keep your rolls fresh, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. And for longer storage, freeze them in a freezer bag for up to a month—just reheat them in the oven or microwave when you’re ready to enjoy.
