What makes a good ranch dressing great?

For me, it’s all about adding smoky, spicy chipotle peppers to the mix. This Chipotle Ranch Dressing has become my secret weapon in the kitchen. The combination of cool, creamy ranch with warm spices and a hint of heat is seriously chef’s kiss.

Why I love this recipe

  • Quick and easy – I can have this ready in under 10 minutes with minimal effort.
  • Customizable heat level – I control exactly how spicy it gets by adjusting the amount of chipotle peppers.
  • So versatile – I use it on everything from salads to tacos to chicken wings.
  • Better than store-bought – I know exactly what goes into it, and the flavor is unbeatable.
  • Budget-friendly – I make a generous batch for a fraction of the cost of specialty dressings.

Ingredients

chipotle ranch dressing ingredients in bowls on countertop
  • mayonnaise – use a good-quality brand for the best flavor
  • sour cream or Greek yogurt – either works; Greek yogurt will make it slightly tangier
  • lemon juice – adds brightness to the dressing
  • chipotle peppers in adobo sauce – finely chopped; adjust quantity to control spiciness, the sauce adds smoky depth
  • spices – onion powder and garlic powder, smoked paprika salt and black pepper

Step by step

  1. In a bowl, combine mayonnaise, sour cream, and lemon juice, whisking until the mixture is smooth.
  2. Add chopped chipotle peppers, adobo sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper, stirring to mix evenly.
  3. For an extra creamy texture, puree the dressing using a food processor or an immersion blender.
  4. If it feels too thick, gradually add water until it reaches your preferred consistency.
  5. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Tips for Best Results

  • Start with less Chipotle. You can always add more heat, but you can’t take it away, so begin with one pepper and taste before adding the second.
  • Let it rest. The flavor really develops after chilling, so don’t skip the refrigeration time.
  • If you want restaurant-quality texture, take the extra minute to blend it for smoothness.
  • For the ideal thickness, add water one tablespoon at a time until you reach the desired consistency for drizzling or dipping.
  • Everyone’s preference for salt and spice is different, so sample it and tweak as needed

Variations

The beauty of homemade dressing is that you can make it exactly how you like it. Here’s how:

  • For a lighter version, substitute all the mayonnaise for Greek yogurt, which adds extra protein and tang.
  • If you’re craving more herbaceous notes, stir in some fresh cilantro or a squeeze of lime juice.
  • If you want it spicier, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or an extra chipotle.
  • For a milder, kid-friendly version, use just the adobo sauce without any actual peppers; you’ll still get that smoky flavor without the heat.

Serving suggestions

You will love using it as a dip for crispy Dorito chicken tenders, buffalo wings, lemon pepper wings, nachos, fresh veggie sticks, or a spread on sandwiches and wraps, or as a zesty topping for tacos, burrito bowls, and quesadillas. It also makes an amazing salad dressing, try it drizzled over a Southwest salad with black beans, corn, and grilled chicken.

Storage

Store this spicy ranch dressing in an airtight container in the refrigerator, where it will stay fresh for up to one week. The flavors actually continue to deepen over the first day or two, so it often tastes even better after sitting overnight. Give it a good stir before using, as some separation is natural.

If the dressing thickens up in the fridge, simply whisk in a teaspoon or two of water to bring it back to your preferred consistency. I like to make a batch at the beginning of the week, so I have it ready for quick lunches and easy dinners throughout the week.
