Homemade sourdough croutons are a delectable way to repurpose stale sourdough bread and add a burst of flavor and texture to your dishes. They are also a great way to save money and reduce food waste.
If you have leftover sourdough bread, these homemade croutons are easy to make and taste way better than store-bought croutons.
Ingredients
You only need a few basic ingredients to make these DIY croutons:
- sourdough bread
- unsalted butter
- Italian seasoning
- garlic powder
- salt & black pepper
Step by step
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Cut your loaf of bread into generous ¾-inch cubes with a serrated knife.
- Melt butter: divide your stick of butter into four cubes (this ensures even melting) and place them in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for approximately 1 minute, or until the butter is completely melted.
- Stir the garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper into the melted butter until well combined.
- Transfer the bread chunks to a large bowl and drizzle the melted butter mixture over them, spreading it evenly.
- Gently toss bread cubes with your hand or a rubber spatula, ensuring they are coated with the butter and seasonings.
- Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and evenly spread the bread cubes in a single layer.
- Bake for about 15-20 minutes, stir, then bake an additional 10-15 minutes or until the croutons turn golden brown. Actual baking time can vary depending on the size of the bread cubes.
Tips for best results
- you can use any kind of bread you like but sourdough has a lot of flavor on its own so if using a less flavorful type of bread you may want to increase the seasonings
- you can definitely use stale bread or fresh bread, do not use bread that has mold on it
- take this basic crouton recipe and play with the flavors: fresh herbs, red pepper flakes, parmesan cheese, and onion powder are all great additions to this recipe
- if using salted butter omit the salt from the recipe
- you may substitute olive oil or avocado oil for the butter in equal amounts
Serving suggestions
Sourdough croutons are incredibly versatile. They are an excellent addition to your favorite salads like our homemade Caesar salad or served with homemade ranch dressing or Greek dressing, providing a satisfying crunch and a burst of flavor.
They can also elevate your favorite soups like French onion soup or creamy soups like tomato soup, turning a simple bowl of soup into a hearty, textured meal. They also make for a fantastic garnish on creamy dips and a convenient, homemade snack.
Storage
Store leftover croutons in an airtight container for up to 1 week. Croutons must be completely cooled before storing or they will soften.
