Description
Transform your stale sourdough bread into irresistible homemade sourdough croutons. These golden, crunchy morsels are the perfect way to breathe new life into leftover bread and elevate your salads and soups.
Ingredients
Scale
- 24-ounce loaf of sourdough bread
- 1 stick unsalted butter (1/2 cup)
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Cut your loaf of bread into generous ¾-inch cubes with a serrated knife.
- Melt butter: divide your stick of butter into four cubes (this ensures even melting) and place them in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for approximately 1 minute, or until the butter is completely melted.
- Stir the garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper into the melted butter until well combined.
- Transfer the bread chunks to a large bowl and drizzle the melted butter mixture over them, spreading it evenly.
- Gently toss bread cubes with your hand or a rubber spatula, ensuring they are coated with the butter and seasonings.
- Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and evenly spread the bread cubes in a single layer.
- Bake for about 15-20 minutes, stir, then bake an additional 10-15 minutes or until the croutons are golden brown and toasted. Actual baking time can vary depending on the size of the bread cubes.
Notes
Store leftover croutons in an airtight container for up to 1 week. Croutons must be completely cooled before storing or they will soften.
