Tips for Best Results

  • Don’t rush the gravy. Take your time whisking it so you don’t end up with lumps, and let it thicken properly before pouring.
  • Cut biscuits evenly. Uniform pieces help everything cook at the same rate and ensure every bite has that perfect texture.
  • Check for doneness in the center. The edges might look done, but I always test the middle with a fork to make sure the biscuits are fully baked.
  • Let it rest before serving. Give the casserole about 5 minutes after baking so everything sets up nicely and is easier to slice.

Variations

If you want to add some vegetables, try mixing in sautéed bell peppers, onions, or even some fresh spinach between the layers.

For a spicier kick, swap out regular breakfast sausage for a hot or spicy variety, or add extra red pepper flakes to the gravy. You can also use different cheeses, like pepper jack adds a nice zing.

Serving suggestions

If you’re hosting a larger gathering, round out the meal with some sheet pan eggs, bacon-wrapped little smokies, breakfast potatoes, and creamy fruit salad to create a full breakfast spread that’ll impress everyone at the table.

Storage

Once it’s cooled completely, cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and keep it in the refrigerator for up to three days.

You can also freeze this casserole recipe for longer storage. It’ll keep frozen for up to three months. When you’re ready to enjoy it, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat thoroughly. The texture might be slightly different after freezing, but the flavor remains just as delicious, making it perfect for meal prep or having a quick breakfast ready whenever you need it.
