I love to grill but sometimes the weather doesn’t cooperate or I’m feeling rushed and don’t want to spend the time it takes to prep the grill and check on the burger patties. Those are the days when I opt for this crazy easy method of cooking burgers in the oven!

Why I love this recipe

These oven baked burgers take all over 5 minutes to prep and 25 minutes in the oven and cleanup is so easy! I can also do other things while they are baking so it frees up time over making them on the grill as well!

Ingredients

  • ground beef – 4 burgers per pound
  • salt and pepper

That’s it! Then you’ll add your burger buns and all the fixins’ like cheese, tomato, onion, lettuce, pickles, etc.

hamburger patties in casserole dish

Step by step

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Form the burgers into patties with your hands. We make ours a quarter pound each. If you make larger burgers you will need to extend the baking time.
  3. Season the burgers generously with salt and pepper.
  4. Place the burgers in a baking dish.

Tip: If you are using a higher fat ground beef, place a rack in the baking dish or deep baking sheet to allow the grease to drain.

  1. Bake for 25 minutes or until burgers are your desired doneness.

What kind of ground beef to use

I usually pick a 90/10 or 80/20 ground chuck for making oven baked burgers because the higher fat count adds so much flavor, but you can use a 97/3 as well. When I use the 80/20 I do place them on the rack as mentioned above to make sure they don’t sit in their own grease and be aware that there will be some shrinkage of the burger patties as the fat cooks off.

Add ins

If you are using good, quality beef I like to only use salt and pepper, but if you would like to add more seasoning to the burger patties you can try garlic powder, Worcestershire, dried onion or garlic, or Montreal steak seasoning.

How to warm hamburger buns

I like to place the burgers on buns with cheese and wrap with foil, then place them back in the oven for a couple minutes to warm the bun and melt the cheese but that is an optional step. You can also place the buns directly on the rack in the oven for a few minutes to warm and toast them as well.

Hamburger toppings

  • cheese – cheddar, pepper jack, American, pick your favorite!
  • bacon
  • fresh sliced tomato
  • lettuce
  • sautéed mushrooms
  • white or red onion
  • ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise

FAQs

How do you keep hamburger patties from shrinking?

The patties shrink as the fat melts off during cooking. Using a leaner meat will keep the hamburger patties from shrinking as much.

Can you freeze cooked hamburger patties? Uncooked?

You can freeze hamburger patties either before or after cooking. I recommend freezing them in a single layer on a parchment paper lines plate or tray, then transferring them to a freezer bag or freezer-safe container.
Thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

How do you reheat leftover burgers?

I usually use the microwave to reheat a single burger but if you are reheating more than just one burger read all our suggestions for the best way to reheat burgers without drying them out.

Serving suggestions

Wondering what to serve with hamburgers? Beyond the usual suspects like fries or tater tots, I like salads like a Caesar salad or Greek salad, or a tasty BLT pasta salad or Tuscan pasta salad.

Description

Put away the grill because today we are going to talk about how to make hamburgers in the oven and it’s SO easy! With just 30 minutes you can have fresh hamburgers ready to enjoy!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground chuck
  • salt and pepper
  • hamburger buns and desired toppings

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Form the meat into 4 patties. Place in a baking dish.
  3. Season liberally with salt and pepper.
  4. Bake 25 minutes or until meat thermometer reaches your desired doneness. *see note

Notes

Use a meat thermometer to bake burgers to desired doneness: 135 for medium rare, 140 for medium, 145 for medium well, and 160 for well done. If you are using the method of placing on the bun and wrapping in foil then returning to the oven, cook to 5 degrees under your desired doneness as the burgers will continue to cook as the buns warm.

Nutritional information is for patty only, using 90/10 ground beef.
