I love when the weather gets nice enough to cook dinner out on the grill. Whether its grilled grouper, grilled brats, or grilled corn, I love cooking outdoors!
Why I love this recipe
Chicken drumsticks are super affordable which makes them the perfect protein to feed a crowd, and who doesn’t love the classic combo of honey + mustard?
The star of this recipe is 100% the homemade honey mustard sauce! It is the perfect blend of sweet, tangy and savory.
Ingredients
This homemade sauce only has 3 ingredients, so each one really shines. I use good quality local honey, savory soy sauce and Yellow Mustard.
Honestly, we use mustard like crazy around our house: tangy slow cooker cocktail sausages, the mustard vinaigrette for one of our favorite salads, homemade BBQ sauce and of course, on sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, potato salad and deviled eggs!
Step by step
This recipe could not be any easier and every batch results in perfectly crispy skin, a finger licking sticky honey mustard glaze and tender chicken that falls right off the bone!
One of our secrets to perfectly tender drumsticks is to boil them for about 5 minutes to partially cook the chicken before we put them on the grill. This helps the drumsticks cook more quickly without getting too charred.
- Whisk together the honey mustard sauce. Reserve 1/2 cup of the sauce for serving.
- Boil the drumsticks in a large pot of water for 5 minutes. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate and transfer to the grill.
- Heat a grill to medium heat. Brush the drumsticks with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
- Place drumsticks on the pre-heated grill.
- Once they just reach 165 degrees F, begin brushing on that yummy honey mustard sauce. The mustard and soy give the outside of the chicken great color and the honey will start to caramelize and create that gorgeous glossy sticky glaze.
- Continue to baste the drumsticks in the sauce on all sides and cook for 2-3 minutes to let the sauce caramelize.
Is your mouth watering yet?! Don’t forget to serve the chicken with the reserved honey mustard sauce because you absolutely cannot have too much!
Serving suggestions
Serve these drumsticks with any of your favorite BBQ sides. Try our Italian pasta salad, Greek orzo salad, or rainbow veggie salad. You can also serve them with heartier sides like twice baked potatoes or calico beans.
Storage
Store leftover honey mustard drumsticks in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave.

This recipe looks so delish! We’ve been French Mustard fans forever! Yum!
Can you also put them in the oven instead of the grill?
Absolutely! You may need to adjust the cook time, so I would use a digital thermometer to make sure they are cooked through!
