I am a big broccoli fan overall whether it is simply sautéed like my favorite Italian broccoli or broccoli baked with sausage, but when I get the chance to make it even better with the addition of crispy bacon and a decadent creamy garlic sauce and loads of mozzarella cheese….wow! This easy recipe takes broccoli with cheese sauce to a whole new level!

Ingredients

  • bacon
  • onion
  • garlic
  • broccoli
  • heavy cream
  • mozzarella cheese

Step by step with video

  1. Brown bacon in a large skillet over medium heat. Remove and allow to drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  2. Leave the bacon grease in the skillet and add onions. Sauté for 3 minutes or until onions are soft and translucent.
  3. Add broccoli and garlic cook 3-5 minutes or until broccoli is bright green and fork-tender.
  4. Reduce heat to low and add heavy cream. Stir and simmer 3-5 minutes or until the sauce is thickened.
  5. Return bacon to the pan and stir.
  6. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese. Allow to melt or alternatively broil for a minute to melt the cheese.

Variations

  • substitute all or part of the mozzarella with parmesan cheese for a slightly different flavor…you could also try provolone, swiss, or even gruyere
  • add red pepper flakes to spice it up
  • add diced cooked chicken breast to add more protein and make it a full one-pot meal

Storage

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3 days.

  • 1 pound broccoli florets
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
