Sausage rolls are an easy appetizer recipe based on a British classic. Savory sausage is wrapped in a buttery, flaky puff pastry for a grab and go snack perfect for parties.

I was introduced to the wonderful world of sausage rolls the year we spent living in England. This British sausage roll is similar in popularity to our USA Pigs in a Blanket. They are a savory, easy to make snack that are perfect for parties.

Savory ground sausage is seasoned with panko bread crumbs and spices for a perfect flavor. Then the filling is wrapped with puff pastry dough and baked until golden brown. Let me tell you, these sausage rolls do NOT last long in my house! My three teen boys gobble them up so quickly!

    Ingredients

    sausage roll ingredients
    • puff pastry dough - I prefer Pepperidge Farms brand
    • ground pork sausage -adjust flavor by choosing hot, mild, or sage flavored varieties
    • eggs
    • panko breadcrumbs - these are thicker than traditional bread crumbs
    • salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Italian seasoning

    Step by step

sausage roll filling ingredients in white bowl before mixing
    1. Thaw puff pastry dough. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    2. In a large bowl combine the sausage, one egg, panko bread crumbs, and seasonings. Mix together with your hands until blended through.
    3. Divide each puff pastry sheet into thirds lengthwise, cutting along the folded edge.
    4. Divide the sausage mixture into six equal portions. Roll each section into a log until the length is the same as the puff pastry. Place the sausage in the middle of the puff pastry and pinch the dough closed around the filling. Place them seam-side down on the prepped baking sheet.

Hint: if it is hard to fit the dough around the filling press the dough lightly with your fingers to flatten it along the sides.

    1. With a large knife, gently cut each sausage roll into four equal pieces.
    2. Mix an egg wash and brush each roll with it before baking for 25 minutes or until golden brown.

    Serving suggestions

You can eat these rolls hot or at room temperature, by themselves or serve alongside yellow or honey mustard as a dip.

    Storage

Store sausage rolls in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 5 days.

To freeze unbaked sausage rolls stop before the egg wash. Freeze rolls on a baking sheet until frozen through, then transfer to a freezer bag up to 3 months. To bake, lay frozen rolls on a baking sheet, add egg wash and extend baking time 5-10 minutes until golden brown and cooked through to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Description

Sausage rolls are an easy appetizer recipe based on a British classic. Savory sausage is wrapped in a buttery, flaky puff pastry for a grab and go snack perfect for parties.

    Ingredients

    Scale
    • 2 pack puff pastry dough
    • 1 lb ground pork sausage
    • 2 large eggs
    • ¾ cup panko breadcrumbs
    • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1 teaspoon onion powder
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • pinch black pepper
    • 1 tablespoon water

    Instructions

    1. Thaw puff pastry dough according to package instructions.
    2. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    3. In a large bowl combine sausage, breadcrumbs, 1 egg, and seasonings. Mix well with hands to combine.
    4. Divide sausage mixture into 6 equal portions.
    5. Cut each puff pastry sheet into 3 sections lengthwise along the fold lines.
    6. Roll each section of sausage mixture into "logs" in equal length to the pastry dough.
    7. Lay the sausage in the middle of the dough and use fingers to pinch the dough shut around the filling.
    8. Lay the rolls seam-side down on the baking sheet. Use a knife to gently cut each roll into four equal sections.
    9. Mix egg and water together and brush each roll with the egg wash.
    10. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown.

    Notes

    • if you have trouble closing the dough around the sausage, use fingers to gently flatten the sides of the dough to stretch it out
    • can be eaten warm or at room temperature
    • Unbaked sausage rolls can be frozen before adding the egg wash. Freeze on a baking sheet and then transfer to a freezer bag. Cook from frozen by adding egg wash and extending cooking time an additional 5-10 minutes.
