Dips are my weakness, and this one is top of the list. Those slow-cooked onions turn irresistibly sweet and caramelized, blending into a smooth, creamy dip. Serve it up at your next gathering, or keep it all to yourself!
Why I love this recipe
Dips make everything better, and this caramelized onion dip is proof! They add a deep, sweet flavor that pairs beautifully with the creamy base, making every bite rich and satisfying. It’s easy to throw together and always disappears fast—exactly what I want in a dip!
If you’re as into dips as I am, you should try my crack chicken dip or crack corn dip.
Ingredients
- yellow onions
- cream cheese
- sour cream
- mayonnaise
- unsalted butter
- chives
- salt and black pepper
Step by step
- Peel and thinly slice the onions.
- On medium-high heat, melt the butter and add the sliced onions. Stir occasionally. Lower the heat when they start to brown. Cook on medium-low heat until the onions are thoroughly caramelized, about 20-25 minutes.
- In a food processor, combine the cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Season with salt and pepper, then process until smooth.
- Once the onions are caramelized, let them cool for 5 minutes. Add them to the dip in the processor and pulse briefly to mix them in.
- Serve with chips and enjoy!
Tips for Best Results
- Be patient: Caramelizing onions takes time, but the deep, rich flavor is worth it. Let them cook low and slow for the best results.
- Stir occasionally: You don’t want them to burn, just soften and develop that golden color. Stir every few minutes to ensure even cooking.
- Cool before mixing: Adding hot onions to the dip can thin out the texture. Let them cool before stirring them in.
- Go full-fat: For the creamiest, most indulgent dip, use full-fat sour cream and mayo. The extra richness makes a big difference!
Variations
This dip is already delicious, but why not make it even better? Try mixing in shredded cheese for a creamier bite or a bit of Worcestershire sauce for a more complex flavor. Crispy bacon bits add a smoky crunch, and cayenne pepper brings a subtle heat.
Serving suggestion
Chips are a classic, but this dip deserves more! Try pairing it with pretzel bread, crisp veggies, or buttery crackers.
Storage
Store leftover dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. The flavors intensify as it sits, so it tatstes even better later! Stir before serving.
I do not recommend freezing this dip as the texture changes upon thawing.
