Do I Need an Espresso Machine to Make Coffee Recipes With a Milk Frother?

An espresso maker with a frother is the easiest way to make those copycat coffee drinks. But the good news is you can still make some delicious coffee recipes without an espresso machine. Handheld frothers will allow you to get the job done and enjoy creamy-frothed milk in any coffee drink!

How to Use a Handheld Milk Frother

A handheld electric milk frother is really easy to use! You can get a battery-powered handheld frother or one that plugs in. Either way, they are very simple tools that just have an on/off button, and some of them have different speed settings.

All you have to do is submerge the frother in the milk and then turn it on and slowly move it around in the milk. Just be careful not to pull it up to the top of the milk while it’s on, or you’ll have a mess!

For best results, you’ll want to heat your milk before frothing it and adding it to your coffee, especially if your drink is hot. If you’re making iced coffee, it’s not as important, but hot milk, or at least warm milk, can still make your froth much creamier and creates a fluffier foam. If you’re making a cold foam recipe, you’ll want to use cold milk.

Can I Froth Plant Milks?

You can definitely substitute plant milk if you want to. Since whole milk has a higher percentage of fat, it will always froth better. But you can still froth oat milk, almond milk, and coconut milk.

You can even use skim or nonfat milk if you’re just looking for a lower-fat option. You can go the other direction, too, and use heavy cream for a really decadent coffee drink.

A café latte is a coffee drink made with espresso and steamed milk. To make a café latte at home with a milk frother, start by preparing a single shot of espresso.

Use the frother on your espresso maker to heat and froth about ¾ cup of milk. Alternatively, heat the milk in a saucepan and then froth using your handheld frother. Pour the steamed milk into the espresso and top with a light layer of foam.

First, make a single shot of espresso or some strong coffee from your coffee machine. Then, grab your frother and use it to heat up and froth about ½ cup of milk.

Next, add a few tablespoons of chocolate syrup to your espresso, stir it up real nice, and pour in the steamed milk. Finally, top it all off with a light layer of foam and enjoy your homemade mocha!

5. Chai Latte

A chai latte is a spiced tea-based beverage made with black tea, milk, and a blend of spices.
