Last year, I hosted a Pinspired Pretty Packages Party (phew, that’s a lot of Ps!) where about 25 ladies came to my house to craft at 7 or 8 different stations, making homemade gifts and fun ways to package them! All of the projects can be found here in Part 1 and Part 2!
Well, the 2013 Pinspired Party happened a few weekends ago and I totally spaced and forgot to take pictures – BOO! But, I did want to share one of my favorite crafts that we made ..
rustic wooden nativity ornament
I pinned a similar ornament a while ago and realized it was an item for sale rather than a tutorial. So, I put my DIY thinking cap on and knew that it would be perfect to make for a sweet and simple holiday project! So, here is what you’ll need to {create this}:
Materials:
Wooden clothespins (the old school, no spring kind) – 2 per ornament for Mary & Joseph
1 ¾″ Wooden peg – for baby Jesus
1″ Wooden star
Metallic Wire – 12″ long
Thin Metallic Cording
Jute twine or ribbon for hanging
Hot glue gun & glue sticks (I am using the pretty pink cordless one I won in a giveaway from The Winthrop Chronicles – thanks, Sarah!)
- Tie the thin metallic cording in a bow around the small wooden peg.
- Wrap a length of metallic wire around one of the clothespin’s “head”. I did it sort of like twisting the twist tie on your bread – just tuck in any extra tail of wire and don’t snip off the long length of wire left!
- Hot glue your two clothespins together, side by side.
- Hot glue the small wooden peg at an angle on the front of your clothespins.
- Wrap the rest of the wire around the star at various points until all the wire is wrapped around the star (you can see this best in the main picture above or in the last photo in the collage).
- Create a loop with your twine and hot glue the knot to the back of the ornament – my knot fit perfectly in the space between the two heads.

Very cute!! This will be part of our church craft night.
A question though: what wire gauge did you use?
Keri says
Hi Natalie! I honesty don’t recall the gauge – I think we picked it up in the jewelry making section of our local craft store. The wooden star is not too heavy so as long as the wire is sturdy enough to keep the star upright, it should work fine!
Tawnie says
Where did you buy the clothespins and pegs? did you cut the pegs or did they come like that? I’d like to make these for 60 people so looking for an inexpensive way to do that.
Thanks.
Keri says
Hi Tawnie – I bought the clothespins at Walmart and the pegs from Michaels or Joanns. If you are looking to make a bunch, you want want to search for bulk supplies online 🙂
