Do you remember when I put together a vintage love birds wedding shower last year? That shower was for my very best friend … my mom! I was an only child and she was a single mom, so we have a pretty special bond that has lasted throughout our lives. She found love again in her fifties and was married last October to a pretty special guy named Bill (he was our “lucky” photographer, ha ha)! SO cool, right?! Since we don’t get to spend quite as much time together (being a blissfully-in-love newlywed will do that), last Friday night, after a super yummy dinner together, I invited my Mom to World Market to pick up a few things for a special Mother Daughter Spring Citrus Spa Day that I had planned for us. (It was also a great way for me to scout out Mothers’ Day gifts for her!)

Baskets!! LOVED the baskets! :: A full cart of gorgeous green & white goodies
I heart this rustic furniture/decor :: See that smile? My mom is hooked! :: Swoon! Containers, jars & bottles!
Don’t I have the cutest mom?! We ooohhhhed and ahhhhhed over the gorgeous dishes and glass ware, picked up the cutest little white tasting dishes, fawned over the baskets and organizational items, ogled the jewelry and scarves, meandered through the fun food and drink section, sniffed the candles, dreamed about redecorating with the gorgeous furniture and decor items and in general had an awesome time! I’m pretty sure my Mom is hooked – sorry, Bill!
At the end of the evening, our cart was full of lovely things to make our Mother Daughter Spring Citrus Spa Day so special! We even nibbled a little sea salt dark chocolate on the way home – you know, to keep our strength up – and it was beyond divine!
Even though we were having our spa day at home, I still wanted to have that same relaxing, indulgent feeling that we would get at a spa. Soft green, clean bright white and pretty sparkly glass ware set the mood for our Mother Daughter Spring Citrus Spa Day …
- Iced citrus green tea in a gorgeous curvy pitcher …
- Crisp ginger cookies, grapes and dark chocolate on a DIY cake plate …
- Pretty green and sparkly glass candle holders for cotton swabs, cotton rounds, nail polish and our rings …
- The ingredients for DIY citrus nail soak and citrus salt scrub …
- Decadent hand soap and lotion waiting near the sink …
- Soft cloths to dry our hands …
Let me show you all of the elements that made this day SO special!
Iced Citrus Green Tea
In a large pitcher (I LOVE the curvy Acapulco glass pitcher), pour chilled freshly brewed green tea over ice and lemon, lime and orange slices. I raided my mom’s cabinets and grabbed a square dinner plate to hold the tea and extra citrus fruit. I garnished each pretty plum blossom glass with an orange slice.
I arranged all of the white tasting dishes on a vintage tray to hold the ingredients for the DIY citrus nail soak and citrus salt scrub: olive oil, lemon juice, honey, Epsom salt and lemon zest. This was our favorite part of the day … mixing the hand soak in the green bowls, stirring scrub in the square tasting bowls … so FUN!
I thought I would share our recipes for the citrus nail soak and citrus salt scrub with you:
Citrus Nail Soak
In a small bowl, mix together warm water and stir in honey until it is dissolved. Add a splash of lemon juice and stir. Place hands in small bowls and allow fingers/nails to soak.
Once you’ve soaked your nails, stir together the scrub.
Citrus Salt Scrub
In a small bowl, stir together Epsom salt (you could also use brown sugar or granulated sugar) and add olive oil until it holds together and is easily stirred. Add a splash of lemon juice and freshly grated lemon zest and stir to combine. Gently massage hands, fingers and cuticles with the scrub. Rinse with warm water and use a gentle hand soap to wash your hands. Dry hands and apply lotion.
We painted our nails, sipped citrus tea, chatted about this and that, munched ginger cookies and caught up on the little things in life. Perfect day? I would say so!
Girl time spent with my mom is one of my favorite things and I am so thankful that she is less than an hour away! And though my boys and I won’t be painting our nails together anytime soon, I am inspired to look for simple ways to spend time and make memories with them!
Now, I know, it probably sounds cheesy but my mom is pretty amazing! No. Really. She was a single mom until I was 5 and I never remember a frown on her face, even when she was working two jobs to support a daughter by herself. More importantly, she is the epitome of compassion, faith and family. In 1998, my step-dad was diagnosed with cancer. He was adamant that he didn’t want to spend his last days in the hospital, so she spent almost four months caring for him at home during the final and darkest days of his disease. She supported my marriage as we worked through the debilitating presence of addiction (so proud to say that Chris has been clean for 10+ years) and she loves my boys with an unconditional love that is moving and unforgettable. And now she has found a second chance at love and is the happiest I have ever seen her. All in all, she is my inspiration as a wife, mother, friend and woman!
