Now, true story, I LOVE anything scrubby!  Foot scrubs, face scrubs, hand scrubs, scrubby bath sponges … I shared a recipe for brown sugar oatmeal scrub with you a while ago, and that scrub is perfect for cold winter months.  But it is SPRING and I wanted fresh and bright, lemon and mint!  Both lemon and peppermint are both scents that lift your mood and promote a sense of well being, so this scrub is a staple in my morning shower.

Lemon Mint Sugar Scrub Ingredients

  • granulated sugar
  • coconut oil
  • lemon essential oil
  • peppermint essential oil
  • lemon juice and zest

The sugar and lemon juice and zest gently slough off dry skin, the coconut oil moisturizes and lemon and peppermint provide a mood boost.

How to Make Lemon Mint Sugar Scrub

In a bowl, mix together 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar, 1/2 cup coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, zest from 1/2 lemon, 5 drops of Young Living Peppermint Essential Oil and 5 drops of Young Living Lemon Essential Oil.

  6. What do you think the shelf life is for these? Can the small jar be keep for a week, a month (in a cool dark spot assuming)? And should the extra be kept in the fridge if you aren’t going to be using it in a week? I’m going to be making some today. Can’t wait to try this 🙂 It’s my first time making it.

    1. There is no water in this mixture so it should keep in a cool dark place for at least several weeks. I just cracked open my second jar of this scrub {it’s been a few weeks since I made it} and it looks and smells delicious 🙂

  9. I just made a arch of this and it smells amazing! But it is also very runny because of the coconut oil…will this sort of harden up again or should try and pour some out?

    1. Hi Olivia – Coconut oil does liquefy at around 76* so it may be thin if it is warm. It should solidify when it cools down. Mine was thin as well, but the sugar was still scrubby and it was super moisturizing! You could add more sugar to thicken it up a bit, too! Thanks so much for stopping by and I’m so glad you tried the sugar scrub!!

        1. Hi Erin,
You can use either. Solid coconut oil will liquefy as you use the scrub due to the warmth of your skin. Since I live in Florida, mine is almost always liquid. Just adjust the amount used to get the consistency you like. 🙂

    2. You could try a larger sugar too. I made one with raw cane sugar and its much thicker then ones Ive made with granulated. I actually prefer it. Happy scrubbing!

      1. Maybe I will try the raw sugar cane next time , the batch that I made is a bit running but I love it anyway!!

  12. Hello!

Was just wondering if the scrub expires because of
The lemon juice or lemon zest.

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Shayna,

I still have my little jar by the shower and after several weeks, it is absolutely fine! It may not keep indefinitely, but made in small batches and used, you should not have any issues. Thanks so much for stopping by!

  13. I made your Lemon and Mint scrub last night. I am a Young Living junkie, as well, but added a few more drops of each as it didn’t smell as strong as I would have thought originally. I hate to sound like a dummy here, but could you tell me what DIY stands for? Thanks for this recipe, LOVED it!!

  17. I’m not sure it’s the brand of coconut oil, but wow, it’s potent. I put in lots of lemon and peppermint YLEO and all I smell is coconut. Which I like, but the point of this is to be lemon and peppermint. 🙂 Any suggestions or should I just put more YLEO in the recipe when I’m using this brand of Coconut oil? THANKS!!

  18. I made the scrub the other day and followed the directions. I have a question? Did your scrub have the scent more of the coconut oil? I started with 5 drops each of the YL oils. I ended up using 35 drops total. There is a faint scent of the YL Oils. The coconut oil is still the predominant smell. Did this happen to you. Would appreciate suggestions or feedback. Thank you.

  19. Hi, I’m so glad I found this recipe, it was the first recipe that wasn’t so liquidy. I did however make a Lavender essential oil, and just use the Amount of Sugar and coconut oil you suggested. Though a bit of mixing for me. This recipe turned out wonderful! Thank you so much. I’m so glad I found your website on Pinterest!

    1. Hi Angelica – I used kraft paper tags and a small alphabet stamp set/ink pad to make the tags. I love the little handmade touch!
