Watermelon Slice Garland ~ a quick Summer craft

When I think of Summer, my thoughts naturally drift to the beach and BBQs, sunshine and sunscreen, lazy days and lemonade and of course, watermelon!  So when Angie and Carolina  invited me to create a quick Summer craft that takes 15 minutes or less (excluding drying time) as part of Craft Lightning Summer Edition, I knew that a little paint and some wooden triangles could be transformed into a fun watermelon slice garland that looks good enough to eat … well, almost!

These mini slices of watermelon would be the perfect pop of color for a wreath or added to a Summer mantle!

Here are the simple supplies that I used:

  • Wooden triangle garland pieces (I picked mine up at Pick Your Plum - that is my affiliate link so anything you snag at Pick Your Plum helps keep shaken together up and running.)  You could easily make your own wood triangles or substitute canvas or chipboard.
  • Acrylic paint in two shades of green, pink and black
  • Foam brush
  • Twine or ribbon

First, I painted the bottom 3/4 of the triangles (towards the points) with bright pink paint. Then, I added a thin line of light green paint – it doesn’t have to be precise or perfect.  Next, I added the darker green paint along the top of the triangles to finish the “rind” and let it dry.  By the time I finished the last triangle, the first few were dry, so this project really is done in 15 minutes or less! Finally, using a toothpick, I added a dot of black paint and dragged it to a point to create black seeds!  Voila!  Watermelon slices!

Once all of the paint was dry, I tied the slices together with twine and add little ribbon bows.  This quick Summer craft is done!

It was actually really fun to craft something simple and uncomplicated … no special tools, no crazy techniques, just good ol’ fashioned crafting!  I just might have to do a little more of this!

All week long, Angie at The Country Chic Cottage and Carolina at 30 Minute Crafts will be posting 15 minute crafts on their blogs in the morning and featuring more 15 minute crafts every afternoon!  That is a ton of inspiration for some quick crafting … why, it could be Craft Lightning!!

I’ve rounded up a few more of the projects I’ve posted that can be finished in 15 minutes or less:
