{taste this} chocolate eggnog pecan bread pudding

I think one of the best things about the holidays is leftovers!  Leftover turkey and cranberry sauce turns into open faced sandwiches, leftover ham ends up in creamy potato soup ... and if you're lucky enough to have a little leftover eggnog, then you are on your way to this decadent chocolate eggnog pecan bread pudding!!

This bread pudding is rich and chocolately thanks to the double chocolate pound cake with chocolate chunks and a warm drizzle of hot fudge.  This dish comes together quickly since I don't have to bake a pound cake from scratch ... just thaw the Sara Lee pound cake slices!  The eggnog flavor is present, but since I didn't add any additional sugar to the bread pudding, it is not overly sweet.

Quick, make it before you start your New Years Resolution diet!!

chocolate eggnog bread pudding
Yield:  6-8 servings
Adapted from this recipe.

6 Sara Lee double chocolate pound cake slices, thawed according to package directions
3/4 stick butter, melted
1 1/2 cups eggnog*
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/3 cup chopped pecans
hot fudge sauce for garnish (optional - but do it!)

*If you can't find eggnog or don't like eggnog {gasp!}, you can substitute milk and adjust spices to taste.

Cut pound cake into 1 inch cubes.  Drizzle melted butter over pound cake cubes and toss gently to coat.  Place cubes in prepared baking dish or ramekins.  My dish was an oval baker with dimensions of 9.5 in x 7.5 in x 2.5 in.  Whisk the remaining ingredients together (except the hot fudge) and pour over the pound cake cubes.  Refrigerate for 30 minutes.  Bake at 350* for about 30-35 minutes.  I baked mine longer to accommodate the dish I baked it in - you just want to make sure any egg mixture is fully cooked.  If the edges of the cake begin to get too crispy, lightly cover with foil until pudding is fully baked and set.  This next step is optional, but believe me, you want to do it.  Drizzle with warm fudge hot sauce.  No really, go back and do it if you didn't the first time.

Since we're on the subject of chocolate, why not take a look at some of my favorite chocolate recipes ...

{create this} easy New Years decor & my one little word (okay, phrase)

Have you heard of "One Little Word"?  You can read about it HERE on Ali Edward's blog.  It's basically the word (or in my case, short phrase) that is your inspiration for the year to come.  This year, my one little word phrase is make it count.

easy New Years decor & my one little word

What do I mean by "make it count"?
I want our time together as a family to be meaningful ...
I want to enjoy every moment, activity, movie watched on the couch, dinner together, baseball game ...
I want to do a little good in our community each month and make a difference, even if it just a small one ...
I want the time I spend at work away from my family to be productive and beneficial ...
I want the projects and recipes I share here at shaken together to be well planned, well executed and beautifully photographed (well, as beautiful as I can with a point & shoot camera, ha ha!) ... this is definitely a work in progress :)

I'm going to try to do a monthly update on our efforts to make our days count!!

Since our family of four is still under the weather after a bout with the flu and I knew our New Years Eve would be low key this year, I decided to whip up some New Years decor so we can still celebrate together!  And I incorporated my one little phrase into our simple New Years decor!

easy New Years decor with kraft, black, white & silver

These DIY projects require a few basic paper crafting supplies and a little time, but they are the perfect last minute projects to add some festive fun to your New Years Eve!  I used kraft, black, a touch of silver and a star theme for these quick crafts!

First up, cupcake paper confetti pockets!!

easy New Years decor - cupcake paper confetti pockets

I stamped 2013 on the plain kraft cupcake papers and added a few stamped stars.  I put about a tablespoon of sequins (you can also use confetti) in the center of the cupcake paper.  I folded up two sides and then pinched the other sides together, closing it with a strip of black polka dot washi tape.

For the black/white zebra pockets, I added sequins, folded up the sides and stapled the pocket closed with a kraft paper star.

These are an easy way to keep confetti corralled until it's time to toss it when the clock strikes midnight!

Next, I put together a make it count memory jar!

I grabbed a big mason jar and a little berry basket full of paper strips so we can document the best days of 2013 ... I can't wait to read these next year :)  I stuck in a metal sign (originally a "dill" garden marker that I covered with a stamped kraft paper sign) with a reminder to make this year count!

I created a 2013 banner with kraft paper, polka dot paper, ribbon and black eyelets and tied it to this wire hanger from Pick Your Plum - love it!

easy New Years 2013 paper banner

There are little mini party hats that I made by cutting a large kraft paper circle in half and stapling it together in a cone shape.  I added black circle stickers for polka dots.  Finally, I pushed silver pipe cleaner through the top of the hats and then curled it around a pencil for a twirly topper!  These are lined up in front of a LIVE Bingo card tucked into a vintage floral frog.  Love the stars on the Bingo card!

Finally, I made these make it count pockets so we can jot down our goals, hopes, wishes, resolutions and plans for the future.

I used a kraft paper CD envelope, added a strip of scrapbook paper, trimmed down these cool ruler-ish East of India paper chain strips, added a piece of washi tape and stamped 2013 and make it count.  Inside each pocket, I added a manila tag, from the office supply store stamped with i will try, a piece of lined scrapbook paper for our 5 goals and a basic index card stamped with prompts for i know, i hope and i can.

So, tell me ... How will you be ringing in the New Year?  Did you decide on your one little word?  Are you a resolution maker or resolution hater?!  I'd love to hear your thoughts!

{taste this} easy butter pecan Sandys #BloggersforSandyHook

{This post was originally planned for Friday, December 21st, but I was tending to a sick Camden in the hospital.  I felt it was still important to share this post and the message behind it!}

I am sharing a cookie recipe and joining tons of other bloggers for a day of cookies and crafts as a simple way to remember the events in Newtown, CT last Friday. No, sugar and glitter won't make everything better, but this day of sweets and craftiness is just a big virtual hug to those whose hearts have been broken. Our hearts, prayers, thoughts are with you.

So today? I'm sharing a super easy recipe in honor of those lost at Sandy Hook Elementary ...

And yes, I spelled that wrong on purpose :) These cookies aren't complicated, they're not fancy but they are delicious!  So, get on in the kitchen with your little ones or loved ones and bake up a little something sweet!

Easy Butter Pecan Sandys

#BloggersforSandyHook Yields about 24 - 28 cookies

1 butter pecan cake mix
1 stick butter, melted
2 eggs

In a large bowl, add 1/2 cup (1 stick) melted butter and 2 eggs to a butter pecan cake mix - that's it! 3 ingredients! The dough will be fairly stiff. Scoop out about 1 tablespoon of dough or roll it into a ball and place 2 inches apart on baking sheet/baking stone. Bake at 350* for 11-14 minutes ... baking time may vary, so make sure the center baked and the edges just lightly browned.  Totally optional (and pretty delicious!), but you could add a simple brown sugar glaze or sandwich a scoop of butter pecan ice cream between two cookies.

These are BEYOND yummy and just a little more so because of the reason behind the baking!

Here are a few more of my favorite cake mix cookies!!

{what's shakin' link party} #40

Life sure can throw curve balls, huh?  I'm writing this from a hospital room while Camden (our 12 year old) is watching cartoons, waiting for room service to open and hooked up for an all night EEG.  Yesterday, he either had a seizure or passed out, so here we are.  He had febrile seizures when he was little and his last seizure was in 2001, so I am believing for GOOD NEWS today!

Hopefully, we'll be released later today and I can share an awesomely easy recipe for cookies as part of #BloggersforSandyHook!

It's been a fun week around here since our last party ...

Kaleb gave his teachers a delicious holiday breakfast with Starbucks coffee and Walmart bakery goods ... see it HERE!

I shared two yummy warm drinks perfect for cold weather ... hot caramel apple cider floats and hot chocolate floats

Need a last minute gift wrap idea?  Check out sparkly pom pom flowers and use them for gift wrapping ... that tutorial is HERE!

Okay, so enough about me, let's see what's shakin' at your place!!

Welcome to the {what's shakin'} link party #40!!

I would love it if you would grab a button and add it to your post or party page ... and a text link works just fine, too! It's not required, but it would make me super happy!!

Shaken Together
Here is the plan:
  • Link up your latest and greatest recipes, projects, tutorials, tips & tricks, parties you hosted, DIY, makeovers, upcycles ... basically anything other than your blog's main page, giveaways, other link parties or businesses
  • We all gush, pin, stumble, share and marvel at your awesomeness!
  • Fantastic features and party faves go up on Sunday!

{love this} holiday breakfast teacher gift with Starbucks & baked goods

After the disturbing news on Friday about the heartbreakingly sad events in Connecticut, spending quality time at home with my family was even more important than usual.  So, I ran out to Walmart in the early morning hours on Saturday (no really, like at 7am!) to get our grocery shopping done before the boys were awake and raring to go.  While I was there, I noticed this display:

Hmmm ... I never thought about really "pairing" coffee with baked goods.  I love pastries AND Starbucks, but I rarely splurge on it! Needing a sweet little pick-me-up, I decided to grab Starbucks' Holiday Blend coffee (the last two bags on the shelf & with a coupon!!) with a box of Walmart's fresh baked cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing.  A little early morning quiet time was in order and this pair was the perfect way to enjoy that!

While the coffee was brewing, the kitchen smelled amazing ... I just love the smell coffee early in the morning!  Once the coffee was brewed and piping hot, I filled one of my favorite mugs (added what is probably an excessive amount of cream!), grabbed a stack of magazines that have been sadly neglected lately, popped a cinnamon roll in the microwave for about 10 seconds and proceeded to find an early morning moment of joy by our Christmas tree!

I tried the coffee first and found it rich and satisfying but not too dark. Sometimes Starbucks coffee is a little strong for me, but I was pleasantly surprised!  This blend is more mild and something I would definitely drink each morning at home.  Oh, but when it was paired with a warm cinnamon roll with thick sweet cream cheese icing, it was like a little slice of heaven.  The Holiday Blend is supposed to compliment flavors of ginger, orange, pumpkin, cloves and cinnamon ... believe it or not, the coffee and cinnamon roll actually tasted better together!  Starbucks and Walmart hit the nail on the head with #DeliciousPairings!!

When the boys saw those awesome cinnamon rolls, they made "kid coffee" aka hot chocolate. Chris even decided to pass on "regular" morning coffee to try the Starbucks Holiday Blend with his cinnamon roll.  My quiet morning moment turned into a big ol' family breakfast and while it wasn't what I expected, I wouldn't have it any other way!

While at Walmart, I had one of those "ah-ha!" moments and knew I had also found the perfect gift for our favorite Extended Day teachers!  Kaleb goes to the before and after care program - or "Extended Day" - at his elementary school since both Chris and I work outside of our home.  I struggle to find a meaningful gift to give to the eight or so teachers that take such good care of him.  But this year ... say hello to a decadent holiday breakfast teacher gift!!  A stack of fresh baked cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing from the Walmart bakery and Starbucks Holiday Blend coffee!!

holiday breakfast teacher gift #DeliciousPairings at shaken together

After stacking up three boxes of those yummy cinnamon rolls on a red charger, I picked up a few packs of holiday plates and napkins and tied it together with the Starbucks coffee using sparkly mini garland to make enjoying this breakfast even more festive!

Kaleb was so excited to bring breakfast (and a pretty darn special one!) to his teachers ...

One of the teachers even called me on my way to work to thank us for breakfast and when Chris picked Kaleb up from school, two of the other teachers told us how much they appreciated the cinnamon rolls and coffee.  We are so blessed to have such special people in our boys' lives ... sometimes, it's the "little things" like the simple gift of a yummy breakfast that mean so much more than we think!  Never underestimate the power of sugar and caffeine ;)

{create this} snow sprinkled pom pom flowers & easy gift wrapping

Christmas is just a week away and hopefully you've made a good dent in your holiday shopping and  you are ready to wrap all those awesome finds!  Today, I've got a pretty little way to add some sparkle and charm to holiday gifts!  And there is plenty of ways for even the littlest of hands to help, so bust out the yarn and glitter to {create this}:
snow sprinkled pom pom flowers

You probably have most of the materials on hand, so these low-maintenance blooms are perfect for a rainy (or snowy) day activity!  Here is what you'll need:

- white yarn
- a fork
- Sparkle Mod Podge (or your favorite liquid adhesive)
- disposable foam brush
- fine, iridescent glitter
- thin sticks (look, it's crafting & yard work, ha ha!)
- hot glue gun

Using the white yarn and a regular kitchen fork, use the tutorial I put together HERE to create fantastically fluffy pom poms!  Hot glue the white pom poms to thin sticks from your yard and your flowers have stems!

Hold the stem and use a disposable foam brush to brush Sparkle Mod Podge (or liquid adhesive) over the tips of your pom pom flowers and sprinkle glitter over the flowers while the adhesive is wet.  Make sure to prop the flowers up to dry.

Now that you've made these wonderful winter-y flowers, you can add them to a rustic floral arrangement or add handmade flair to your gifts!  One of my favorite ways to wrap gifts is to embellish plain kraft wrapping paper - you can pick up a roll at your local dollar store and get creative!

Attach a sparkly pom pom flower to a kraft wrapped gift with striped twine, thick satin ribbon or even jute and add a sprig of red winter berries and greenery.  Classic and just so pretty!!

Need a little more sparkle and holiday cheer?  Look no further!!

{taste this} hot chocolate floats

With all of the recent sad news and tragic events, I find it tough to jump back into "regular life" without feeling just a little guilty ... you, too?  This morning, I was really touched by a post by Beckie over at Infarrantly Creative that you may want to read ... click here for "I pray, I give".  I thought that I (and maybe you?) could all use a bit of bright, a smidge of happy and a teeny tiny treat ... so I am going to post today.  Not out of disrespect or disinterest.  But just because life continues moving forward, little by little ... Chris and I go back to work today, the boys will head off to school, Christmas will be here in eight days, there is still laughter and love in our household and for that, I am beyond thankful.

So, here we go ... put on a holiday movie or your favorite show, pile on the couch with a good book or family photos, spend some time together with your family and maybe indulge in the most wonderful thing to cross my lips in a long time.  Okay, maybe a little dramatic, but these are SO.GOOD.  Yes, let's {taste this}!!

hot chocolate floats {taste this} at shaken together

There is nothing better than a rich mug of hot chocolate on a cold night, right?!  Well, unless it is topped with a scoop of ice cream, sprinkles and maybe a drizzle of hot fudge!

hot chocolate floats {taste this} at shaken together

Whip up a batch of hot chocolate - you can use instant mix, I won't judge - but there are tons of easy recipes for homemade hot chocolate that will probably rock your socks off :)  I am dying to try this hot chocolate mix from Something Swanky!

Anyway, gather your mugs and fill about 2/3 full with your hot chocolate.  Add a scoop of ice cream (we used peppermint!) and sprinkle on your favorite toppings.  I added a drizzle of warm hot fudge and festive holiday sprinkles!

This is seriously the best of both worlds ... an ice cream sundae and a sweet steamy mug of hot chocolate!!

#BloggersforSandyHook & features from two fun link parties

Where do you start to find the words to write about what happened in Connecticut?  How to express the sorrow even though we are far away and those lost are perfect strangers?  Our family cried as we watched the story unfold, held our boys especially tight as we tucked them in Friday night and felt slightly guilty that our family was whole and together.  There will never be a good time to move on, there will never be anything said or done to make it up to the families whose lives were devastated, there is nothing to do to bring those loved ones back.  On Friday, I'll post a recipe along with our regular link party in honor of the victims, families and community of Newtown, CT for #BloggersforSandyHook ... you can join even if you don't have a blog.  It's little, but it's something.  And something is better than nothing.

And now (with a few less exclamation points than usual), take a look at my favorite three recipes shared at the Bloggers' Holiday Heirloom Recipe Link Party ... and don't forget that you can head over to take a peek at all of the recipes linked up and grab a copy of our free e-cookbook HERE!!

Amy at Home Sweet Thrifty Home shared her grandma's recipe for pumpkin bread ... what can I say?  I am a sucker for pumpkin!

And I think I'm going to have to start a new birthday tradition and make Ashley's Mississippi Mud (no bake!) dessert ... head over to Domestic Imperfection for the easy recipe!

Take a look at Grandma Bea's blueberry cobbler shared by Melissa at no. 2 pencil ... almost looks too good to eat.  Almost ;)

Okay, now onto the features from the{what's shakin' link party} #39!  You can still link up your amazingness HERE ... ummm, and did you see you can win an iPad mini?!  Merry, merry!!

Sooo, Jocelyn at BruCrew Life made an awesome sounding raspberry chipotle turkey pocket sandwich that looks SO.darn.good!  This will be coming to lunch boxes around here soon!!

I really LOVE these super cute naughty or nice printable tags from The Life of the Party!!  My boys better be on their best behavior!

Inspire Me Heather shared her family's tradition of making a garland from holiday cards ... what a sweet way to keep those holiday memories a part of their celebration for years to come!!

Speaking of garland, Made in a Day has 5 easy holiday garlands to dress up any window, frame or tree!!

Stacey from Glued to my Crafts shared a sweet and sentimental (and crafty!!) way to preserve her anniversary flowers in an ornament!

And because I recently tried tiramisu for the first time - I know! - and I think I might be obsessed, I can't wait to try this tiramisu pudding from French Press!!

Grab a pretty little button if you were featured and post it proudly ... you deserve it, friends!!

So there is my little dose of happy in a dark couple of days!  This week, I am going to try to smile a little more, hug a little tighter and pray a little longer!  Hope to see you back here again soon!!
