{create this} vintage love birds wedding shower

It is not very often that you get to witness a real life fairy tale love story unfold before you.  But I have!   The story of my mom and her soon-to-be hubby is sweet and moving and beautiful and perfectly ordered by God.  She has found a man to hold her hand, tell her she is beautiful, support her in everything she sets her heart or mind to, laugh with her and grow old with ... after an almost fourteen year long "season of singleness".  It is a Hallmark movie just waiting to happen :)

So, when there was talk about a wedding shower, I was in, in a BIG way!!  Hello, vintage love birds wedding shower!!

Other than the food and gifts for the games, this sweet shower was put together on a serious budget and using things from my stash!!  I purchased one fat quarter fabric bundle at JoAnn's with a coupon, 8 pretty little plants from my local Walmart, 8 wooden bird house picks on clearance at Hobby Lobby (part of the loot I picked up with my gift card from The Frugal Girls - thanks, Heidi!!), two wooden silver Ws and a wooden heart.  My total out of pocket cost for craft supplies was less than $25!

I can't wait to show you all the big projects and the little details that I think make an event ... first up, the drink table ...

To keep it simple, we served raspberry iced tea and pink lemonade to drink.  I stamped some kraft card stock signs and added a paper punch with a little bird stamp.  The two little bird nests are from Pottery Barn ages ago.  I painted a wooden heart from the craft store bright pink, punched holes in it using my Crop-o-Dile and tied it using some of the material scraps between two silver Ws ... for William and Wendy.

Instead of a traditional cake or cupcakes, I put together a 'Love Tweet Love' chocolate fountain table will all sorts of delicious dippers!!

I ripped strips of the fabric I purchased and tied them to a piece of jute twine for the fabric banner.  The gorgeous white lace tablecloth was found in a bag of plain white tablecloths that our church had ... it was the perfect fabric for this table!  I pulled out all of my vintage dishes found at local thrift stores and yard sales to pile in pretzels, cream puffs, Nutter Butter cookies, fruit and rice krispie pops!!  Finally, I used my scrapbooking supplies and a $1 IKEA Tolsby frame to make the 'love tweet love' sign.  I tied a few more scraps of fabric on the frame as well.

We played several wedding shower games:
  1. The Purse Game (printable found here)
  2. The Clothespin Game - our guests could not say wedding, Bill or honeymoon!  I used a raspberry colored Sharpie to doodle hearts on the clothespins :)
  3. The Name game - each guest got a famous woman's name taped to their back (TV personalities, cartoon characters, political figures, musicians, fictional characters, etc.) and had to ask yes/no questions to other guests to try to figure out who they were.
For the prizes, I gave away my mom's "favorite things" ... a bucket full of chocolate, a pretty mug filled with Moroccan mint green tea bags and yummy smelling goodies from Bath & Body Works.  On each gift, I tied a sweet little stamped bird tag.

For a crate for cards on the gift table, I white washed a wooden crate and aged it a bit with brown ink.  Using a few scalloped circle kraft card stock punches cut in half, I created a mini garland and connected the half circles with jump rings (used in jewelry making) and attached it to the crate.  I used the same little bird stamp and letter stickers for the finishing touches.

Next to the gift table, I used two Pottery Barn Teen magnet boards ($4 yard sale find!) to display my mom's engagement pictures ...

I made the "love birds" banners using Pick Your Plum wooden pennants, fabric scraps and chipboard letter stickers.  To make the cute flower rosettes at either end, I used three kraft cupcake wrappers (each one folded in half and glued together in a circle), a large scalloped circle punched from scrapbook paper and a felt flower purchased at Michael's.

Each table had a flower center piece ... a pretty plant that I wrapped in burlap, tied with a fabric scrap and placed a little wooden birdhouse pick in.  I painted the birdhouses with acrylic paint to match the colors of the shower and tied on ribbons and fabric.  I placed each plant on a square of fabric I cut with pinking shears and added a bird (snagged from my bird themed dining room!).  Eight lucky guests left with a plant ... I figured I was just saving them from my black thumb, ha ha!

And here she is ... my mom, my Little Madre, Mum ...

... I can't wait to watch her walk down the aisle in 6 days, watch her slip a ring on Bill's finger, see that relationship status change from single to married, hear "I now pronounce you husband and wife", be a witness as they start their new life together and celebrate as God's promise to her is completed!!

P.S. All of the amazing photos of the shower were taken by the lovely and talented Linda Wilson from Linda Wilson Photography.  If you are in the Central FL area and need an experienced, amazingly patient, detail oriented photographer ... Linda is your girl!

{create this} 3 minute Halloween bat wreath

With me, crafting needs to hit three main points:  quick, cute and fairly inexpensive.  And this {create this} craft is the perfect example!  Grab a few supplies and let's whip up a ...

3 minute Halloween bat wreath

Using one embroidery hoop, a package of 12 foam bats - 1/2 are matte and 1/2 are sparkly - a ribbon or fabric scrap (for hanging) and your hot glue gun ... this wreath takes shape quickly and packs a cute little sparkly Halloween punch!

Overlap the bats around the embroidery hoop (hiding the hoop) and secure them with hot glue.  Loop your ribbon or fabric through the metal tightening thingee or just around the hoop itself and hang!

I love bats during Halloween ... we actually have bats outside our house (that we thought were birds when we first moved in, ha!)  They are always out right before the sun comes up and it is SO cool to watch them reel and wheel and dive after mosquitoes/bugs!

How about a few more quick Halloween crafts?

{taste this} apple pie cheesecake ginger snap trifles

Okay, ya'll ... this is it!  The last recipe for APPLE WEEK!  Did you enjoy the caramel apple munch mix and two cute ways to package it?  What about the apple jelly meatballs?  They are perfect for get togethers and football season!  I even shared easy caramel apple cinnamon rolls for an easy apple-y breakfast!  I am going to wrap up apple week with a super yummy apple pie cheesecake ginger snap trifle!!  Oh yeah, you want to {taste this}!!

Don't worry - these are super easy!  First, you'll need to whip up no bake cheesecake filling and then just layer ginger snaps and apple pie filling ... YUM!!

no-bake apple pie cheesecake

8 oz. cream cheese, softened (I used low fat)

1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup apple pie filling (store bought or homemade)
1/2 - 1 teaspoon cinnamon (adjust to your personal taste)
1 tub Cool Whip, thawed

In a bowl, cream together the cream cheese and granulated sugar.  Add vanilla extract, apple pie filling and cinnamon.  Mix together until the apples are broken down and everything is incorporated.  On the lowest setting on your mixer, mix in the Cool Whip.  You don't want to over mix or the Cool Whip will break down a little.  You can chill this mixture until you are ready to serve the trifles.

To serve, use small trifle cups or ramekins and layer a gingersnap, apple pie cheesecake, a dollop of apple pie filling and repeat!  Top with a smidge of pie filling and another gingersnap.  Just look at all these lovely layers ...

These got two thumbs up from the Little Bug :) I layered them in foil cupcake wrappers for work ... they gone before lunch time!!  This would make an easy no-bake dessert for a Fall party or Thanksgiving dinner!

{taste this} easy caramel apple cinnamon rolls

Are you lovin' APPLE WEEK as much as I am?!  I have shared a yummy caramel apple munch mix, two cute ways to package it and these apple jelly meatballs that are perfect for football season!  And now, I've got breakfast covered!!  Today's {taste this} is easy caramel apple cinnamon rolls!!

These yummy breakfast treats are stuffed with cinnamon-y apples and drenched in caramel and icing!  The best part is they start with store bought cinnamon rolls to make this morning treat do-able ... even after only one cup of coffee :)  So let's get started!

1.  To make the apple filling, dice up 5 or 6 slices of apples (I used Crunch Pak!).  Add 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon and a sprinkle of lemon juice.  Microwave in a glass bowl for about a minute or until apples are tender but not mushy.  Since these rolls don't bake very long, this cooks the apples just enough so they are not overly crunchy.

2.  Start with one 8-count tube of refrigerated cinnamon rolls.  Use your hand to press them out thin and spread a spoonful of apple filling in the center.

3.  Roll up the cinnamon roll lengthwise and cut it into three pieces.  The apples might come out; just tuck them back in.

4.  Place the three pieces in one cup of your cupcake pan - cut side up.  Continue for all 8 rolls.  Bake at the temperature directed on the package JUST until lightly browned.

Using the icing included with the cinnamon rolls, add it to any leftover juice from the apple filling.  Drizzle the icing and some caramel over the top of the rolls.

These are pretty delightful warm straight from the oven, the icing and caramel pooling in all the nooks and crannies!  Perfect to pull apart and munch ... and permission is granted to lick your fingers!

{taste this} apple jelly meatballs

It's APPLE WEEK ... the perfect way to kick off Fall with all sorts of yummy treats and an apple craft or two!!  I have shared caramel apple munch mix and two adorable ways to package it for gift giving!!  Today, I've got a savory apple recipe to make in your crockpot!

I know I am not the only one who is obsessed with Fall ... the colors, the pumpkins, apples, cool weather, scarves and FOOTBALL!!  Now, I'm not going to fib ... I am not a huge football fan.  I can watch it.  But boy do I love football food!  Almost every Sunday we put together what we call a "football feast" with a few of our favorite munchies:  veggies and dip, fruit and fruit dip, cheese and crackers, buffalo chicken dip ... you know the drill.  We nibble for lunch and dinner and it makes for the perfect lazy Sunday afternoon!

And recently, I tried my aunt's recipe for sweet and savory apple jelly meatballs!  These are the yummiest thing to come out of my crock pot lately!  And they are beyond easy!!

So, let's get this touchdown dish started ... it's time to {taste this}!

Add all of the following to your crock pot:
  • Two bags (about 25 oz. each) of frozen meatballs - beef, turkey, Italian, take your pick
  • One 18 oz. jar of apple jelly
  • One 14 oz. jar of pizza sauce
  • One small bottle of ketchup
Simmer on low for about 4-5 hours, stirring occasionally, until the jelly, pizza sauce and ketchup are completely mixed together and the meatballs are tender and hot in the center. You may need to adjust the cooking time depending on the size of your crockpot.

These are so yummy ... just a smidge of sweetness from the jelly and a savory tomato based sauce.  Stick six meatballs in a toasted hot dog bun or sub roll and top with Parmesan cheese for easy breezy meatball subs for dinner!

I hope you're enjoying Apple Week ... I've got a yummy breakfast treat and a sweet no bake dessert coming up in the next few days, so get pickin' and peelin' those apples!  ;)
