{create this} oh happy day banner made with canning jar lids

I have been trying to reign in my crazy compulsion to buy random things (usually on clearance) with the thought, "I can totally make something with that!"    This same affliction occasionally manifests itself in the inability to throw anything away.  Can anyone relate?

I will admit that I failed miserably during a recent trip to Walmart for goggles for The Bugs and laundry detergent.  Case in point:  the .35 packages of canning jar lids in the clearance aisle.

But aren't they so cute ... all gingham checked and red-n-white?!  And for $1.05 for three packages, at least I didn't break the bank.  AND I made something fun to celebrate a great summer day or just any perfectly lovely day ... let's {create this}!

Here is what I used:
  • 9 canning jar lids (if you can only find the silver lids, mod podge some pretty paper on!)
  • chipboard scrapbook letters, washi tape (!), various embellishments, paper, paper punches, ribbons, felt, buttons, bakers twine, etc. - get creative with whatever fun stuff you have on hand
  • adhesive/craft glue
  • Crop-o-Dile (or something that can punch holes through the metal lids)
Here are the close ups and embellishment details for each lid :)

  • oh:  ruler paper chain link (East India Paper Co.), washi tape, white chipboard letters
  • button spacer:  white scallop paper punch (inked of course), 3 buttons, bakers twine
  • h:  kraft scallop paper punch, yellow velvet scallop ribbon, white chipboard letter
  • a:  kraft scallop paper punch, washi tape, white chipboard letter
  • p:  kraft scallop paper punch, torn piece of handwriting paper, white chipboard letter, small knot of gingham ribbon
  • p:  kraft scallop paper punch, K & Co. label, washi tape, white chipboard letter
  • y:  kraft scallop punch, Pink Paislee summer punch outs, white chipboard letter
  • heart spacer:  white scallop paper punch, blue felt heart, yellow paper flower, pin
  • day:   ruler paper chain link (East India Paper Co.), washi tape, white chipboard letters
I punched holes in the lids with my Crop-o-Dile ... she's such a crafty beast!!  I tied the lids together with simple white twine (so I didn't distract from the letters and embellishments) and added colorful ribbons and baking twine to the end of the banner to hang it with.

The bold primary colors and crafty hodge podge just make me smile!  Use magnets to hang it on your fridge, add it to a summer mantel or punch the holes so it hangs vertically if you have less space!  If you can't find canning jar lids, try chipboard circles or up-cycle round chipboard restaurant coasters.

Boy did it feel good to get back in my craft room ... I have a feeling you might just see a few more {create this} posts in your future ... after all, I have .70 of canning lids left to craft with!!

  13. Keri,

So cute. So clever. And I love the use of the washi tape too! And, yes, I'm guilty of buying things with the idea of somewhere sometime in the future it will be made into something ...

    :)

  32. Keri,

This is so stinkin' cute I can't stand it! Like you, I suffer from the "compulsion to buy random things that I am sure I can make other things out of, as well as the inability to throw things out". It is quite possible we were separated at birth, as I live in NY, you in FL, and we all know that at some point all NYers MUST move to FL!

I found you blog post through your feature at A Diamond in the Stuff, and I am definitely following you from now on! Great stuff here, particularly great writing!
