{taste this} fried dough: breakfast splurge made with frozen bread loaves

Just so you know, there is NOTHING healthy in this post ;)  Every now and again, we all need to splurge on a little something, right?!  And splurge we did!  And I'm pretty sure you will, too.  So come on in and {taste this} ... fried dough
And just for the record, I didn't even get a chance to sift the powdered sugar before The Bugs dug right in ... pretty blog picture be darned!
Our friends introduced us to their family's tradition of fried dough for breakfast one morning at the beach.  (Sort of not fair, right?  Here, eat this lovely delicious fried dough.  With butter.  And cinnamon sugar.  And then put on your bathing suit!)  Oh but it is worth that beach cover up!  ;)

The dough becomes these little puffs of soft and fluffy deliciousness that pretty much melt in your mouth.  And when you top them with butter or syrup or honey or cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar ... or all of the above in The Bugs' case ... it makes for a mighty fine morning!

fried dough
yield:  about 10 per loaf

Frozen Bread Loaves
Your choice of toppings:  cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar, honey, syrup, butter, sliced berries or bananas ...

1.  We use Bridgford bread loaves (in the grocery store freezer section) and they run about $3 - so reasonable and super versatile!  So far, we have made strombolis, homemade pizza, cinnamon rolls, slider buns and fried dough!  Anyway, allow the loaf (loaves) to thaw and rise.

2.  Then, simply pull off a small piece, flatten it slightly in your palm and slide it into your hot oil.  Flip once, remove when lightly browned and drain on paper towels.

3.  Top with toppings, grab a few napkins, bite and sigh.  Repeat, repeat, repeat.

I think The Bugs and their buddy Connor downed 10 of these each ... (drat their metabolism!!) ... and would have gone back for more!!

Most definitely a splurge.  Most definitely a treat.  Most definitely on my mind while I stir my Kashi cereal into a Greek yogurt.  OH ... go on ...

  4. I was introduced to these when a sweet neighbor lady invited my family over and made these as part of the meal. She served them with homemade strawberry freezer jam and we completely LOVED them. Thank you for the memories and reminder how much my kids would like me to make them again!

  7. We make these every year with my husband's family at Christmas! (A once-a-year splurge!) They call them Pull-Johnny's. I have no idea why - while we do pull/stretch the dough, there's no one named Johnny....They are SO delicious and addictive - my husband and his brothers always have a contest to see who can eat the most (do boys ever grow up??!). Thanks for the craving! ;)
