Lovebirds Specimen Art – Valentines Day Home Decor

I know it’s only January, but around my house, I went from straight from Christmas to my regular decor … boooooo!!  So this year, I decided to get all lovey-dovey with some fun Valentine’s Day art.  This is the first four (maybe more!) Valentines crafty tutorials and it all starts with a little lovebirds specimen art … welcome to another {create this}!!

First, I spray painted a thrifted gold frame – I love the chunky frame and the details but the gold just wasn’t cutting it for me!  But red sure does!  When in doubt, I always go red or turquoise, ha ha.

Between coats of paint, I found this cute little bird template (and I am dying to make her scrappy little sparrows, too!) and reduced the size by 1/2 when I printed it out to trace.  I used bird #1 but use whichever one floats your boat.  If you have a fancy cutting machine, I’m sure there’s a bird out there you can use, too.

Select several different coordinating papers (scraps work perfect for this project) and trace your love birds.  I cut out 9 birds – and don’t forget to flip your template over for one bird so your love birds at the bottom face each other. Awwwww!

As I do with any project involving paper – ink the edges!  In other words, just run an ink pad around the edge of your shape for instant age and character.

Glue your birds down on a piece of card stock, don’t forget a heart (they are love birds after all), throw it in a frame and instant romance!!  Or at least adorable home decor, right?!

  10. Hi! Love this! Total rookie, though. What ink and how do I apply? Thanks!

  11. Rhonda – my FAVORITE ink pads are by Versa Magic. They are little rain drop shaped ink pads that come in groups of 4 for $10. I’ve seen them at most every craft store (Joanns, Michaels, Hobby Lobby). I love “Jumbo Java” – a good dark brown that I ink everything with. And I just take the ink pad and run it lightly around the edges of your paper item – doesn’t need to be perfect – until I get the “age and character” that I like. Hope that helps!!
